Green means the letter is in the word and in the right position. Yellow means the letter is in the word but somewhere else. Gray means the letter is not in the word. Hard mode makes every revealed letter mandatory in the next guesses and earns 1.5 times the XP. A hint reveals one letter, costs XP, and counts as a guess.
